The Most Durable Streaming Device Receives Its First Software Update in Over Two Years

Nvidia’s set-top streaming box continues to stand the test of time.

When we talk about GOATs, we’re not referring to the farm animals munching on grass before it turns into dry fire kindling. We mean the Greatest of All Time—specifically, the Nvidia Shield TV. As one of the longest-running set-top boxes for Google TV (formerly Android TV), it has been a fan favorite since its debut in 2015. Even the 2019 refresh was well-received, and now, after two years of dormancy, it’s finally getting an update. The Shield TV remains beloved for its longevity and reliability.

Shield Experience 9.2 is now rolling out to Shield TV devices, marking the first major update since late 2022. That previous update helped bring the software closer to the Android version running on other Google TV devices. This latest update is just as robust, addressing numerous bugs related to crashing apps, windows, and codecs. It also introduces a feature that enhances audio matching when using a USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and a beta option designed to smooth out frame rates. Additionally, the update adds support for AURO-3D, a spatial audio technology accessible via HDMI.

Nvidia highlights one drawback: the update will disconnect the Shield TV from your Google Home network. However, instructions are available to help restore the connection. This serves as a reminder that the Shield TV remains a device best suited for tech-savvy users who don’t mind troubleshooting to keep things running smoothly.

The Shield TV has long been a favorite among home media enthusiasts. During its peak, it stood out as the go-to streaming device, offering more flexibility than Google’s Chromecasts from previous generations. While Google shifted its focus to integrating streaming software directly into smart TVs, the Shield TV remained the top choice for users seeking full control over their home media setup with the Android experience.

It’s refreshing to see the Shield TV receiving continued support a decade after its launch—a rarity for most Android-based devices. Today, used Shield TVs can be found on eBay, ranging from $85 to $190.v
